Madeira, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - The opening round of the Madeira Islands Open was suspended Thursday without a single shot being made due to fog.

Tournament officials waited until 5 p.m. local time for the fog to clear, but with visibility still questionable, they decided to suspend play for the day at Santo da Serra Golf Club.

"We have abandoned play today because five of the holes have been unplayable all day due to the fog," tournament director Jose Maria Zamora said. "The decision to call it at 5 p.m. was taken because the players have been sitting in the clubhouse for more than 10 hours and it looked like it the fog was going to remain for the rest of the day. There is a point where the guys get tired so it's best that they get back to their hotels and start afresh tomorrow."

Players will maintain their first-round tee times when they are able to take the course on Friday.
