Fluminense edges Flamengo to extend lead

Fluminense extended its cushion atop the Brasileiro to six points Sunday, as Fred scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Flamengo.

Fluminense has won five of its last six games, and leads second-place Atletico Mineiro by six points. Mineiro dropped points for the fourth straight time, as it was held to a 1-1 draw by Portuguesa on Saturday.

Gremio slipped nine points off the pace in third as it was held to a 1-1 draw Sunday against Santos in a game both sides finished with 10 men Sunday. Neymar was sent off for Santos.

Also Sunday, Romarinho scored a brace as Corinthians downed Sport Recife, 3-0, Leandro Fahel and Helder scored as Bahia defeated Botafogo, 2-0, and Osvaldo scored seven minutes from time as Sao Paulo tied Coritiba, 1-1.

Vasco da Gama stayed 12 off the top as Carlos Tenorio and Juninho Pernambucano scored in the second half of a 3-1 win over Figueirense on Saturday.

Also Saturday, Hernan Barcos scored twice in the first half as Palmeiras moved closer to safety with a 3-0 win over Ponte Preta, Kieza scored two as Nautico beat Goianiense, 2-0, and Cruzeiro tied Internacional, 0-0.
