Russia and Qatar could lose the 2018 and 2022 World Cups if evidence emerges of bribery, a top FIFA official warned Sunday.
"Should there be evidence that the awards to Qatar and Russia came only because of bought votes, then the awards could be cancelled," Domenico Scala, the head of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee, told a Swiss newspaper, according to the BBC.
Both Russia and Qatar have denied wrongdoing in their bidding process to host the World Cup, but Swiss authorities are investigating.
Scala made similar comments in 2013, but in light of the resignation of FIFA President Sepp Blatter and the corruption scandal that has engulfed world soccer’s governing body, his latest remarks will be viewed as a more serious warning, the BBC reports.
