Ferrer, Murray win, Isner falls at Mexican Open

Acapulco, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded David Ferrer and second- seeded Andy Murray advanced while third-seeded American John Isner was upset in the first round at the $1.309 million Mexican Open.

Ferrer, last year's runner up at this event, took out Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on the red clay at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess.

Murray had a bit of a scare as he dropped the first set to Spaniard Pablo Andujar, but rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory in the final match of the night.

Fifth seed South African Kevin Anderson, meanwhile, defeated Frenchman Stephane Robert, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) and Isner was upset by Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5).

Sixth-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon cruised past American qualifier Tim Smyczek 6-1, 6-2, fourth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov ousted Australian Marinko Matosevic 7-5, 6-1, and seventh-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis downed Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei 6-1, 6-1.

Also on Tuesday, Joao Sousa took down Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, Alexandr Doglopolov defeated eight-seed Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-2 and lucky-loser Donald Young defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-3. Feliciano Lopez took a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Edouard Roger-Vasselin, David Goffin held on for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Lukasz Kubot, and Marcos Baghdatis handed Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela 6-2, 6-4.
