Ferrer advances, Haas falls in Auckland

Auckland, New Zealand (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded David Ferrer was a winner in the second-round on Wednesday, while second-seeded Tommy Haas was knocked out at the Heineken Open, a final hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.

Spain's Ferrer had a fight on his hands with American Donald Young and dropped the first set, but cruised in the final two with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1 victory at ASB Tennis Centre.

Last year's French Open runner-up Ferrer is the reigning three-time and four-time overall Auckland champ.

There were several upsets in the second round on Wednesday, as Haas, fourth- seeded Kevin Anderson, and sixth-seeded Benoit Paire all fell.

Germany's Haas was taken down by American wild card Jack Sock, 6-4, 6-4, while South Africa's Anderson was handed a 7-5, 6-4 defeat by American Steven Johnson, who had survived a 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 victory over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the first round earlier in the day.

Paire of France was taken down in straight sets by Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-3, 6-4.

Third-seeded American John Isner had a tough matchup against Slovakian qualifier Lukas Lacko, but persevered in a 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-2 victory.

Fifth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber had little trouble in a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Horacio Zeballos of Argentina. Kohlschreiber titled here in 2008 and was last year's Auckland runner-up to Ferrer.

Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei rallied from a first-set loss to take a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3 victory over American Bradley Klahn, who pulled off a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 upset of ninth-seeded German Daniel Brands in a first-round matchup earlier on Wednesday.

In a match of unseeded players, Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez took out Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-3.

Thursday's quarterfinals will pit Ferrer against his countryman Garcia-Lopez, the 2010 Auckland champion Isner versus Kohlschreiber, Bautista Agut against Sock, and Johnson versus Lu.
