Ferrari's Fernando Alonso fastest at 1st practice for Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal

Fernando Alonso had the fastest time in the first practice for Formula One's Canadian Grand Prix on Friday.

The Ferrari driven by the two-time Formula One champion beat the Mercedes of this year's leaders, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, in the opening session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Alonso's fastest lap was 1 minute, 17.238 seconds, for a speed of 126.301 mph (203.262 kph).

He is third in the drivers' standings coming into the seventh race of the year. With 61 points he is far behind Rosberg's 122. The Mercedes have won each of the first six events.

Hamilton was second-best on Friday, Rosberg was third, and defending champion Sebastian Vettel was fourth.
