Favre has surgery on ankle, no word on return

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre had surgery on his left ankle on Friday that could have him ready for training camp, according to a report on the National Football League's website.

While the 40-year-old quarterback has not decided whether he will return for a 20th season, he has said in the past that if he did play he would require surgery on the ankle he injured during the NFC Championship game in January.

Favre had arthroscopic surgery that is expected to help the three-times league MVP attain a better range of motion, the NFL's website said (www.nfl.com/).

The future Hall of Fame quarterback is coming off one of his greatest statistical seasons, throwing for 4,202 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 16 regular season games.

His season ended one win away from the Super Bowl when he threw an interception with his team close to field goal territory late in the NFC Championship game against New Orleans.

Favre has flirted with retirement for the last few seasons and said earlier this year he was considering whether to have the procedure on his ankle or end his 19-year NFL career.

He was in a similar position last offseason when he had a partially torn biceps tendon in his throwing shoulder repaired before deciding to join Minnesota.
