England moves up to third in FIFA rankings

England reached its highest-ever place in the latest FIFA men's world rankings released Wednesday, at it moved up one spot to third.

Spain maintained its place atop the rankings, and England climbed one place to overtake Uruguay for a place in the top three for the first time in history.

There was no other movement inside the top 10, as Germany remained in second, and Portugal (fifth), Italy (sixth), Argentina (seven), Netherlands (eight), Croatia (nine) and Denmark (10th) remained unchanged.

Ecuador moved up seven places to 20th, a new all-time high, and Libya (38th), the Central African Republic (71st), the Dominican Republic (118th), Aruba (157) and American Samoa (182nd) also reached their highest-ever ranking.

South Sudan joined the rankings for the first time. The African nation joined FIFA this year, and tied Uganda, 2-2, in its first-ever match. South Sudan is 199th out of the 209 recognized countries.

The next edition of the rankings will be released Sept. 5.
