Dontrelle Willis retires

The D-train has retired.

The Baltimore Orioles announced Monday afternoon that pitcher Dontrelle Willis has decided to call it quits after nine major league seasons.

"I'm deeply thankful for everything the game has done for me and I will always remember the great people I met along the way as well," Willis said via Twitter.

The 30-year-old left-hander compiled a 1-6 record with Cincinnati last season and had a 5.00 ERA in 13 starts. He signed as a free agent with the Phillies in the offseason, but was released by them on March 16 before signing with the Orioles four days later.

In four games, including one start, for Triple-A Norfolk this season, Willis compiled an 0-3 record with an 8.53 ERA.

The 2003 NL Rookie of the Year, Willis busted onto the major league scene with an unorthodox delivery that baffled some hitters. He went 14-6 during his rookie season with the Marlins and remained with that team through the 2007 campaign until being dealt to Detroit.

He played for the Tigers until being dealt to Arizona on June 1, 2010, and played at the major league level for Arizona in 2010. His career ends after 205 games (202) starts with a 72-69 record and a 4.17 ERA.
