Los Angeles Dodgers rookie outfielder Yasiel Puig has been selected as the National League's Player of the Week for the period ending June 9th.
The 22-year-old native of Cuba had a remarkable first week in the major leagues, ranking second among NL players with a .464 (13-for-28) batting average and third in both RBI (10) and hits. He led all of baseball with 27 total bases and was tied for the MLB lead with four home runs in his first seven games.
In his second major league contest, Puig went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and five RBI against San Diego last Tuesday. Two days later, the young phenom clubbed his first career grand slam against the Atlanta Braves. In Friday's game against the Braves, Puig had a game-tying solo home run, making him just the second player since 1900 to hit four homers in his first five games.
Other candidates up for the honor were Carlos Beltran, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals; San Diego's Kyle Blanks and Everth Cabrera; Atlanta's Jason Heyward and Kris Medlen and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies.
