Dodgers and A.J. Ellis avoid arbitration

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher A.J. Ellis agreed to a one-year, $4.25 million contract for the 2015 season to avoid arbitration.

The 33-year-old Ellis is coming off a difficult season that included two stints on the disabled list. He batted .191 with a .323 on-base percentage and threw out 25 percent of opposing base stealers in 93 games.

Ellis played in a career-high 133 games in 2012, batting .270 with a career- best 13 home runs.

The Dodgers added competition for Ellis in last month's trade that sent Matt Kemp to San Diego for catcher Yasmani Grandal and pitching prospects. Grandal, 26, is considered to be a superior pitch-framer to Ellis.
