Dobyns extends lead at PGA Professional Championship

Matt Dobyns fired an ace and an eagle on the way to a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, and extended his lead to six strokes after three rounds of the PGA Professional Championship.

Dobyns moved to 11-under 205 thanks to another productive round at Bayonet, which hosts the final 36 holes of the championship. The event used Bayonet and another Monterey Peninsula-area course, Black Horse, for the first two rounds.

With just 18 holes to play, Dobyns is in full control. The next-closest competitor, first-round leader Mike Small, stayed at minus-5 after carding a round of even-par 72. He is alone in second place, while Kelly Mitchum (72) stands in third at 4-under.

Dobyns actually got off to a rocky start, with one bogey and no birdies in his opening nine holes. But around the turn, he started picked up strokes. He birdied the par-5 10th, and four holes later holed his tee shot. At the 200- yard par-3, his shot hit the right edge of the green, took a bounce toward the hole and rolled in.

The shot put him at minus-10, and while he bogeyed the next hole, Dobyns made up for it at the last. He eagled the par-5 18th to head into the clubhouse with a stunning advantage.

Rod Perry (71) and Paul Scaletta (75) share fourth place at minus-2.

Last year's winner, David Hutsell, stumbled to a second consecutive 2-over 74 and shares 36th place at plus-4.
