Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks designated J.J. Putz for assignment Friday, effectively ending the veteran reliever's four- year tenure with the team.

Putz saved a career-best 45 games during his first season in Arizona in 2011 and remained an effective pitcher the following two years, but he's been tagged for 10 runs and 17 hits over 13 2/3 innings this season and missed time with a forearm injury.

The Diamondbacks have 10 days to trade or release Putz, who is guaranteed a $7 million salary in 2014.

Putz recorded 77 saves for Arizona from 2011-12 and helped the club win the National League West title in the first of those seasons. The right-hander posted a 2.81 ERA with 83 saves over 175 overall appearances with the Diamondbacks.

Over 12 major league seasons, the 37-year-old has compiled a 37-33 record, 189 saves and a 3.08 ERA in 572 career games.

Outfielder Ender Inciarte was activated from the 7-day concussion disabled list to take Putz's place on the active roster. The rookie sustained a concussion while stealing a base in a game at Houston on June 12.
