NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - The New Jersey Devils beat Pittsburgh 3-1 on Friday to move within two points of the Atlantic Division leading Penguins in the standings.

Third period goals by Ilya Kovalchuk and Andy Greene, his first score in 36 games, helped the Devils move within touching distance of the Penguins in the standings.

Devils goalie Martin Brodeur continued his good form against the Penguins this season, improving his record to 5-0 against Pittsburgh by making 34 saves, including 15 in the final period.

Patrik Elias opened the scoring for New Jersey at 1:43 in the opening period before Sidney Crosby evened the score 42 seconds later with his 45th of the season.

Pittsburgh, however, were not happy that the Devils' third goal by Kovalchuk at 9:59 in the final period was allowed to stand.

Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury argued that Devils center Travis Zajac interfered with his glove preventing him from making the save.
