Davis Cup throws out Spain appeal of US surface

Davis Cup organizers unanimously rejected an appeal by Spain on Thursday over the choice of playing surface by the United States for the quarterfinal in July, saying it complies with competition regulations.

The Spanish Tennis Federation disputed the use of the surface, better known as Indoor Hard Premiere. The federation said it is not on the list of 91 manufacturers approved by the International Tennis Federation and "fraudulently infringes" Davis Cup rules.

But the ITF's three-member Davis Cup Committee gave the Americans the go-ahead, saying its "Acrylic, which is used in over 30 tour events and two Grand Slam tournaments."

As usual, the pace of the court will be tested with a match ball once it is laid and available for play.

The July 8-10 quarterfinal will be held in Austin, Texas.

Spain has won the Davis Cup four times since 2000, while the U.S. has won a record 32 times.
