Danes backing Wozniacki at Olympic eligibility hearing

Published June 11, 2016

Caroline Wozniacki isn't eligible to compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics yet even though she has been picked to carry Denmark's flag at the opening ceremony.

She has appealed against the International Tennis Federation's decision on eligibility, and Denmark Tennis Federation spokesman Thomas Konigsfeldt said on Friday it was backing her hearing on June 30 during Wimbledon.

The former No. 1-ranked tennis player failed to play the required two Fed Cup ties in the Olympic qualifying period.

Wozniacki was set to meet the Olympic criteria in April against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cairo. But nine days before the tie, she rolled her right ankle so badly that she didn't play for 10 weeks until this week in Nottingham, England.

In February, the Danish Olympic committee chose Wozniacki to be its flagbearer, and she called it "a dream come true."
