Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres due to a stress reaction in his right elbow.
The move is retroactive to July 28.
Garza, 28, is 5-7 this season with a 3.91 earned run average in 18 starts.
To take his spot on the active roster, the Cubs recalled lefty Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa for his first major league start.
Raley, 24, was selected in the sixth round in the 2009 draft by the Cubs and began the 2012 campaign in Double-A Tennessee, where he pitched to a 2-2 record with a 3.51 ERA in eight starts.
He was then promoted to Iowa and went 4-8 with a 3.62 ERA over 14 starts.
