CHICAGO (AP) Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta has his bid for a perfect game broken up by Gregory Polanco's leadoff single in the seventh inning for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Polanco grounded an 0-1 pitch into left field. The announced crowd of 40,617 at Wrigley Field then saluted Arrieta with a standing ovation.

Arrieta, who threw a no-hitter on Aug. 30 at the Dodgers, also hit a solo homer in the second, helping Chicago to a 2-0 lead on Sunday night.

Arrieta is one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young Award. He entered with a major league-leading 20 wins, to go along with 220 strikeouts and a 1.88 ERA.

Pittsburgh began the day with an eight-game win streak, matching a season high.

Chicago led 2-0 after 6 1-2 innings.
