Cornet advances in Guangzhou

Guangzhou, China (SportsNetwork.com) - Second seed Alize Cornet was an easy opening-round victor Monday at the Guangzhou International tennis tournament.

The French veteran whipped Kazakhstani qualifier Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-1 on the hardcourts at Guangzhou International Tennis Center.

Upsets came when Chinese wild card Lin Zhu took out sixth-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) and Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor knocked out eighth-seeded German Annika Beck 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Meanwhile, American Alison Riske topped Swede Johanna Larsson 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) on Day 1.

Also advancing were Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, Japan's Misaki Doi and Israeli Shahar Peer, who titled here in 2009. Peer will face Cornet in the round of 16.

On Tuesday, top-seeded former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur of Australia will open her trip to China against Chinese wild card Wang Yafan.
