Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Indianapolis Colts star linebacker Robert Mathis is more than likely out for the 2014 season after reportedly suffering a torn Achilles tendon during a recent workout.
ProFootballTalk.com first reported that Mathis, whose 19 1/2 sacks led the NFL last season, suffered the injury while working out on his own in Atlanta last week.
The Colts later acknowledged that Mathis, who is in the middle of serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs, hurt his Achilles. The team offered no further details on the injury, stating only that the veteran pass rusher will return to Indianapolis Tuesday to be evaluated by team doctors.
It's a devastating blow to a Colts defense that struggled to generate any pressure during their 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.
Because the injury happened away from the team facility, Indianapolis could put Mathis on the non-football injury list and withhold this year's money.
The NFL suspended Mathis in May for what the 33-year-old claimed was a positive test caused by taking a fertility drug.
