Arlington, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom underwent arthroscopic hip surgery Wednesday.

The Capitals said Backstrom should be ready for the start of the 2015-16 season.

"Nicklas Backstrom underwent a successful arthroscopic surgery on his hip on Wednesday afternoon," the Capitals said in a statement Thursday. "Based on the nature of this procedure, we are confident that Nick will be completely healthy prior to the start of the 2015-16 regular season."

Backstrom appeared in all 82 games during the 2014-15 regular season and finished sixth in the NHL with 78 points while leading the league with 60 assists. He has not missed a game in the last three seasons.

The 27-year-old native of Sweden added three goals and five assists in 14 playoff games, as the Capitals reached the conference semifinals before being eliminated by the New York Rangers in seven games.
