Capitals snap Flyers' winning streak in overtime

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mike Green scored a game-winning overtime goal as the Washington Capitals snapped the Philadelphia Flyers' six-game winning streak with a 3-2 triumph on Sunday.

The Capitals (10-4-0) won their fourth straight game to join the Flyers (9-4-2) and the Los Angeles Kings (10-3-0) in leading the NHL standings with 20 points.

"It's only November 7. I know we can compete against these other teams," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters. "We're in the mix. I'm not saying we're better or we're worse, but we're in the mix to compete against the better teams."

Washington winger Alexander Semin made a wrister at 8:54 in the second period to tie the game 2-2 and, after a scoreless third, Green beat rookie goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky on a power-play to claim the win.

Braden Holtby, Washington's own rookie goaltender, made 23 saves in his first NHL start to offset 36 stops from Bobrovsky, who has thrived this season as the starter in place of the injured Michael Leighton.

Leighton, who helped lead the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final last season, underwent back surgery in September.

Nikolay Zherdev gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the first period before Eric Fehr tied the game. Ville Leino restored a 2-1 lead for the visitors in the second before the Capitals' strong finish.

Alex Ovechkin recorded an assist in the second to extend his points streak to six games.

"Not our best hockey, but there was a lot of stuff we did well and a lot of stuff we can work on," said Philadelphia defenseman Chris Pronger. "To get three points out of four (this weekend) is pretty good."
