Cam Newton practices, questionable for Bucs; Panthers look for fast start with or without him

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says quarterback Cam Newton threw passes and took all of his reps at practice, raising some hope the fourth-year quarterback will play Sunday at Tampa Bay.

Rivera was more optimistic on Friday about Newton's chances of playing, saying he "took the next step" in his recovery process. Rivera reiterated he won't make a decision on Newton's status until Sunday.

Newton is listed as questionable on the injury report.

Rivera was more optimistic about Newton's chances than on Thursday when he talked about not wanting to risk putting a player on the field who can't protect himself.

Newton didn't speak to reporters Friday.

Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, has never missed a start in three seasons for the Panthers.
