Bullpen woes mount for Mets as Parnell goes on disabled list

The New York Mets' beleaguered bullpen corps received another blow when right-hander Bobby Parnell was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

Right-hander Logan Verrett was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take the spot of Parnell, the former closer who has struggled to reclaim his form after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2014.

After two rocky outings over the weekend in which Parnell was lit up for six runs and five hits in two-thirds of an inning, the New York Post reported that the Mets offered him three options: A trip to the DL, a demotion to the minors or designation for assignment.

Parnell, who converted 22 of 26 save chances in 2013, has been tagged for 13 runs and 15 hits over his last 10 appearances. The Mets lost another former closer at the end of July when Jenrry Mejia received a 162-game suspension for his second violation this season of the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Verrett has made six appearances with the Mets since he was acquired from the Texas Rangers earlier this season, notching one save while giving up a run and four hits over 12 1/3 innings.
