BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Bruins have signed captain Zdeno Chara to a seven-year contract extension that will keep the four-time All-Star defenseman with the team through the 2017-18 NHL season, the Bruins said on Saturday.

Chara, who represented Slovakia at the last two Winter Olympics, is in his 13th NHL season and fifth with the Bruins since signing with the team as a free agent in 2006.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, according to a report on the team's website (http://bruins.nhl.com/).

Chara, at six-foot-nine (2.1-metres) the tallest ever NHL player, has featured in 847 games and has 363 points.

Last season the 33-year-old led all Bruins defensemen in scoring and had a career-best 37 assists.

He won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman for the 2008-09 season.
