Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel claims fan was "very aggressive" and triggered altercation

Published January 08, 2015

Johnny Manziel says he tried to avoid an altercation with a man who was "very aggressive" when he approached the Browns' rookie quarterback in the lobby of his apartment building last week.

Speaking on Friday for the first time since the incident, Manziel said the fan, identified in a police report as Chris Gonos, was "very intoxicated" when he confronted the QB inside The 9, a downtown hotel where the popular former Heisman Trophy winner lives. Police responded to the skirmish, which took place at 2:30 a.m.

Manziel didn't have any marks on his face and would not say if he threw any punches. Manziel added he does not have an entourage.

Manziel said he is approached by fans on a daily basis and typically enjoys the interaction.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said earlier this week that the incident has not affected Manziel's playing status.
