Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Rising Canadian Eugenie Bouchard defeated Venus Williams on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at the Family Circle Cup tennis event.
The sixth-seeded Australian Open semifinalist Bouchard outlasted the 11th- seeded former world No. 1 Williams, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4, in 2 hours, 14 minutes on the green clay at Family Circle Tennis Center. The 20-year-old Bouchard broke her 33-year-old counterpart to end the match.
Williams captured a title here 10 years ago.
Meanwhile, third-seeded former French Open runner-up Sara Errani moved on, as the Italian veteran snuck past Chinese Peng Shuai, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).
Also in the round of 16, 12th-seeded former top-10 Slovak Daniela Hantuchova drilled Brazilian Teliana Pereira 6-2, 6-3 and upstart Slovak Jana Cepelova upended 13th-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3. Hantuchova will battle Cepelova on Friday.
The 78th-ranked Cepelova shocked defending champion Serena Williams in the second round on Tuesday. She was just 4-7 on tour this year prior to this week.
