Blue Jays OF Cabrera to have season-ending surgery

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Following a 9-8 loss in 10 innings to the Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that outfielder Melky Cabrera will undergo season-ending surgery on a hand injury.

Cabrera departed Friday's contest favoring his right hand after sliding into first base during a pickoff attempt. The Jays revealed that Cabrera suffered a right pinky finger fracture with an avulsion of the extensor tendon.

The 30-year-old native of the Dominican Republic hit .300 with 16 home runs, 35 doubles and drove in 73 runs over 138 games this season. He also added 42 walks and scored 80 runs.
