Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova back home after 2 months of treatment in US for throat tumor

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Barcelona says coach Tito Vilanova has arrived back home after spending 10 weeks in New York undergoing treatment for a throat tumor.

The club says the coach arrived in Barcelona on Tuesday morning.

Vilanova had a saliva gland tumor removed in November 2011, then underwent similar surgery on Dec. 20. He flew to the United States on Jan. 21 for chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The team says Vilanova was driven "straight home to get some rest," and assistant coach Jordi Roura was to remain in charge of Tuesday's training session.

Barcelona says the idea is for Vilanova "to gradually be re-introduced" at the helm of the squad.
