Back to work: Steelers S Mike Mitchell returns after groin injury scare

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell practiced for the first time after being sidelined by a groin injury.

The five-year veteran missed the first week of training camp. He reported no setbacks after more than two hours on the field with his new teammates but isn't sure if he'll play on Saturday when the Steelers open the preseason at the New York Giants.

Pittsburgh signed the 27-year-old Mitchell to a five-year contract in March. Mitchell says he's eager to show the Steelers they made a wise investment.

Coach Mike Tomlin held several players out of practice on Monday with what he termed "minor issues." The list included rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier, who left practice early on Sunday with a right knee injury.

After six straight days of hitting, the Steelers are off Tuesday.
