Athletics agree to 1-year deal with Abad

Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics and left-handed pitcher Fernando Abad agreed to terms on a one-year contract Friday, avoiding arbitration.

Abad finished his first season in the Bay Area with a 2-4 record and career- low 1.57 earned run average over 69 appearances.

The 29-year-old native of the Dominican Republic held opponents to a .175 batting average and right-handed hitters batted just .162 against him.

Over five major-league seasons with Houston, Washington and Oakland, Abad is 3-18 with a 3.61 ERA in 179 2/3 innings over 196 games.
