Alternate captains for NHL All-Star game chosen

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

All-Star captains Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom are getting some help before they have to pick the rosters for next weekend's midseason classic.

The NHL and the NHL Players' Association said Saturday that Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler will serve as alternate captains under Staal, while forwards Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis will assist Lidstrom.

Staal and Lidstrom were selected as captains for the teams that bear their names in the new format for the game that will be played in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 30. The remaining All-Stars will be divided up in a draft Friday.

The four alternate captains were chosen by the league and the union after they received suggestions from the All-Stars.
