Alex Morgan returns after a long layoff because of an ankle injury

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

Alex Morgan made her season debut with the Portland Thorns after an eight-month layoff because of an ankle injury, returning for only one match before heading off to training with the U.S. national team.

Morgan and Thorns teammates Allie Long and Tobin Heath were scheduled to leave following the Thorns' match against Western New York on Saturday night. The Flash's Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd also were called up by the national team, which plays the first of two exhibitions against France in Tampa, Florida, on June 14.

Morgan, who has 40 goals in 70 international appearances, hurt her ankle during training in late October, played against Brazil on Nov. 10 and hasn't appeared since.
