Adu's goal helps Philadelphia edge Chivas USA

Freddy Adu scored as the Philadelphia Union edged Chivas USA, 1-0, on Saturday at The Home Depot Center in Major League Soccer.

Adu scored off a backheel finish from just steps off the goal line, although he sneaked it in off the inside the left post, in the 40th minute as the Union won their second straight match despite having two players sent off late.

Philadelphia (2-3-1) opened the season with three successive defeats, but has a tie against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a win over the Columbus Crew and the win at Chivas in its last three games.

Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath made five saves for his third straight shutout.

Chivas USA (3-4-0) continued an odd start to the year, as it dropped its fourth match in as many home games this season - but has won all three of its games on the road.

The Union had Keon Daniel sent off with 15 minutes remaining and Gabriel Farfan was sent off five minutes from time, but they held on to climb into a tie with Columbus for sixth in the Eastern Conference.

Chivas is tied for sixth in the Western Conference with the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids.

The Union host the San Jose Earthquakes on April 28, when Chivas USA visits the Colorado Rapids for its next match.
