U.S. embassy warns of 'imminent attack' in Kabul

Officials at the U.S. embassy in Kabul have issued a warning for Americans in Afghanistan on the heels of "credible reports" suggesting that an attack on the capital city is "imminent."

The embassy told U.S. citizens to travel through Kabul with "extreme caution" given the threat of a possible attack within the next 48 hours, according to the embassy.

"U.S. Embassy Kabul has received credible reports of an imminent attack in Kabul City, Kabul Province, Afghanistan within the next 48 hours," the embassy warned. "During this period of heightened threat, the U.S. Embassy strongly urges U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution if moving around the city. There were no further details regarding the targets, timing, or method of the planned attack."

The State Department has long warned Americans that travel to Afghanistan is dangerous.
