The House says it will swear in Rep.-elect Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., on Tuesday. However, there appears to be no plans to swear-in incoming Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., on the same day because he suffered a blood clot and is in the hospital.
The House is willing to swear-in these two freshmen early because their seats have been vacant for so long. Stutzman succeeds disgraced former-Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind., who resigned in May after admitting to an affair with a congressional aide.
Reed will finish the uncompleted term of former-Rep. Eric Massa, D-N.Y. Massa resigned in March after allegations arose that he sexually harasssed male staffers.
Stutzman and Reed will get seniority on the rest of the freshman class which will not be sworn-in until January.
Stutzman will be sworn in on the House floor, probably in late morning or midday Tuesday. There will then be a mock swearing-in and photo-op with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Stutzman’s family later off the House floor.
It is unclear when the House will swear in Reed.
