President Trump on Wednesday took the spotlight off his Supreme Court nominee and instead trained it back on his controversial order temporarily restricting travel from seven countries, arguing the effect of the action is what matters, not the language.
Trump’s tweet took issue with the ongoing effort to define the executive action – which has been variously referred to in the media as a travel ban, or even a “Muslim ban.”
“Everybody is arguing whether or not it is a BAN. Call it what you want, it is about keeping bad people (with bad intentions) out of country!” Trump tweeted.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Tuesday disputed the notion that Trump’s order was a “ban.”
“One million people have come into this country. That’s not a ban,” Spicer said. “A ban would mean people can’t get in, and we’ve clearly seen hundreds of thousands of people come into our country from other countries.”
The rollout of the order during the weekend was rocky, with protests popping up in several airports around the country and some initial confusion over who was permitted to enter the U.S.
But Trump and his advisers have been steadfast about proceeding with the order, which has spurred sharp opposition from Democrats and some Republicans.
