Rep. Tierney's Wife Pleads Guilty to Tax Charges

The wife of U.S. Rep. John Tierney has pleaded guilty to federal charges that she helped her brother conceal income from an alleged illegal offshore gambling business that generated millions of dollars.

Patrice Tierney of Salem entered guilty pleas Wednesday to four counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns related to her fugitive brother, Robert Eremian.

Tierney, a Democrat who is facing a Republican challenger in next month's election in the 6th Massachusetts District, said his wife was betrayed by her brother, and believed his income came from selling or licensing software to legal Internet gambling businesses.

Patrice Tierney's lawyer said that under a plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend she receive probation, with several months of home confinement. He said he'll ask for probation with no home confinement.

Judge William Young set sentencing for Jan. 13.
