Obama hosting Iraqi, Japanese leaders next month

Published December 20, 2015

Associated Press

President Obama plans to host Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi at the White House next month to discuss their fight against the Islamic State.

The White House announced Monday that Abadi will visit on April 14. The White House says the two leaders also will discuss political reconciliation in Iraq and their countries' post-war partnership.

U.S. officials have expressed concern that Iraq's Shiite-led government has not done enough to accommodate its alienated Sunni population, which helped fuel the Islamic State's push into the country.

The White House also says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit the White House and be the guest of honor at a State Dinner on April 28.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will also make a state visit to the U.S. later this year.
