Obama approves $155 million more in aid to Syrian people

Published December 20, 2015

Associated Press

President Obama is authorizing an additional $155 million in humanitarian aid for people in Syria and refugees fleeing the violence there.

The White House says that brings the total U.S. humanitarian aid to Syria over two years to $365 million. The White House says the money is being used to immunize one million Syrian children and purchase winter supplies for a half million people.

In a video message aimed at the Syrian people, Obama says the aid reflects "the commitment of the American people."

The president says that he is "under no illusions" about the situation in Syria, where government forces and rebel groups have clashed for two years.

But he says Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime continues to weaken and will eventually come to an end.
