Does Delaware politics have room for two outspoken alumni of Bill Maher’s “Politically Incorrect” show?
That’s what Delawareans will find out Thursday when Senator Al Franken, D-Minn., heads to The First State to stump for Democratic Senate nominee Chris Coons.
“Senator Franken will talk to volunteers about why our race is so important and how volunteers can make a difference on November 2,” Coons campaign manager Christy Gleason said in a Monday blog post for the Delaware Democratic Party.
With less than a month to go to election day, most polls show Coons leading by double-digits in the race against Republican opponent Christine O’Donnell.
O’Donnell, a Tea Party darling, has come under fire as Maher has released old “Politically Incorrect” clips of the candidate sounding off on evolution, sex, and her experience dating a witch in high school. “I’m not a witch,” O’Donnell assured voters in a new campaign ad out this week. “I’m you.”
It was on Maher’s show that Franken and O’Donnell first faced off as political opponents. The pair sparred over welfare reform and contraception in a joint appearance as panelists in 1997. When O’Donnell, then director of the pro-abstinence group SALT, argued that sex ed students should be taught that pre-marital sex “will have harmful physical and psychological effects,” Franken responded: “"I think hypocrisy will have harmful psychological and physical effects. Don't you?"
Flash forward to 2010, and Franken is slamming O’Donnell for her views on stem cell research, women in the military, and homosexuality. “It’s just those sort[s] of radical opinions that have Palin’s extremists from across the country flooding her campaign with money,” Franken wrote in a September fundraising letter for Coons.
The Minnesota senator has thrown his weight behind several high profile Democratic midterm candidates through his Midwest Values PAC, including Chris Coons in Delaware, Michael Bennet in Colorado, Richard Blumenthal in Connecticut, and Barbara Boxer in California.
He is expected to head north to Boston next week for a fundraiser for New Hampshire Democratic Senate nominee Paul Hodes.
