Mitt Romney. the only remaining Republican presidential candidate never to have served in Congress, is attempting to distinguish himself as the candidate who is most removed from Washington.
"We need to send to Washington someone who has not lived in Washington, but someone who has lived in the real streets of America," Romney said at a recent debate.
Romney claimed Wednesday, "I'm the only guy who hasn't spent time in Washington and Senator Santorum and Speaker Gingrich -- they are the very Republicans who acted like Democrats -- and when Republicans act like Democrats, they lose."
There are no official campaign stops, though, planned Thursday for the former Massachusetts governor. Instead, Romney is scheduled to be in the Washington, D.C. area before speaking at CPAC on Friday.
Taking notice of Romney's schedule, the Democratic National Committee, through their "Rapid Response" YouTube channel, released a video early Thursday titled "Mitt Romney: The Web of Influence," seeking to challenge his latest message.
The DNC video highlights various industry lobbyists whom Romney will meet with while in Washington. Naming representatives from the health care, banking, and energy sectors, the video references the millions of dollars in donations received by the Romney campaign and the Romney-supporting super PAC, Restore Our Future, from those industries.
"We know what their investment has yielded," the video asserts, in reference to candidate Romney's promises of policies seen as favorable to industries from which he's received millions in donations.
The DNC also directs to a "web of Romney influencers" chart posted on BarackObama.com, the official campaign website of President Obama. The chart, based on FEC filings by the Romney campaign and Restore Our Future PAC, creates a web out of the campaign donations from several industries including finance, pharma, and energy. Most notably, the finance sector has reportedly given over $24 million to Romney or his Super PAC.
