Christine O'Donnell is not a household name. Not yet anyway. But the Tea Party Express hopes to change that with a big endorsement and financial boost Monday. "Its a matter of timing," Tea Party Express spokesman Levi Russell told Fox News, "we've had our eye on this race very closely."
The Tea Party Express, one of many groups within the Tea Party movement, has launched candidates including Scott Brown and Sharron Angle to national fame, and most recently played a large role in the Alaska Republican primary battle between Joe Miller and Rep Lisa Murkowski, R-Ark. According to the organization, now is O'Donnell's time.
O'Donnell faces Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., in the Republican primary for Delaware's Senate seat September 14th. She has trailed him by double digits in all the polls and struggled to compete financially. With two weeks until voters in the First State head to the polls, the Tea Party Express hopes to turn things around.
"We hope [the money] will do what it has done in other races, not only our own spending but encourage other last min spending from other organizations," Russell said Monday night, "We're going all in." That means three radio ads and two television spots the Tea Party Express hopes to have up by the end of this week.
And O'Donnell needs that kind of exposure.
Her opponent, Mike Castle, is a nine term Republican Congressman and former Governor. Delaware has only one seat in the House of Representatives, and Castle has sat there since 1993. He's the definition of establishment while O'Donnell has embraced the conservative movement. The winner of the GOP primary will face Democrat Christopher Coons, the County Executive of Newcastle, in November.
All of the polls in this primary race give Castle a double digit lead over O'Donnell (the most recent survey over four weeks ago). With two weeks to primary day, the Tea Party Express hopes to close that gap.
