Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton both hold comfortable leads in Connecticut ahead of the April 26 presidential primaries, with the GOP front-runner nearing the 50 percent mark among likely Republican voters, according to a new poll.
The Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday shows Trump at 49 percent, with 28 percent for Ohio Gov. John Kasich and 19 percent for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Five percent were undecided, while 25 percent of those who named a candidate say they could change their mind.
Trump gets 62 percent of Tea Party members and leads among very conservative and somewhat conservative voters. The billionaire also gets 42 percent of moderate or liberal Republicans, compared to 41 percent for Kasich.
“Connecticut Republicans have gone for outsider candidates such as Linda McMahon and Tom Foley. They continue that trend with Donald Trump,” Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz said in a statement. “The conventional wisdom that Sen. Cruz is too conservative for Connecticut looks true, as he comes in a distant third in the Republican primary. Kasich clearly is outpacing Cruz for second, but running well behind Trump.
On the Democratic side, Clinton holds a 51-42 percent lead over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Six percent are undecided, with 18 percent willing to change their mind. Notably, Clinton holds a 66-25 percent lead among black voters who are likely Democrats, and a wide lead among women.
“Secretary Hillary Clinton wins on all the most important issues to voters, except for income inequality. Sen. Bernie Sanders wins on honesty, values and empathy,” Schwartz said. “But Clinton wins by bigger margins on leadership, electability and experience.”
