House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) says he knows that people are angry about the passage of health care legislation, but cautioned at a news conference Thursday that threats and violence have no part in the debate. "I've said countless times that it's possible to disagree without being disagreeable."
Boehner did not respond to questions about the behavior of members who waved "kill the bill" signs from the balcony of the Speaker's Lobby on Sunday. Nor did he give a definitive answer on where respectful debate ends and unproductive behavior begins.
When asked about a quote he gave to the National Journal about Rep Steve Driehaus (D-OH) being a "dead man" for his health care vote, he said his words were taken out of context. "(I meant) politically... No one saw this quote until Congressman Driehaus and other people made an issue of it."
