Administration officials announced today that 30thousand additional troops will be in Afghanistan by next summer.
This increase will bring the US troop presence to almost 100thousand.
President Obama will officially announce the surge at 8pm this evening at West Point, when the commander in chief will addresses the nation.
During a conference call this afternoon with reporters, administration officials said the President will emphasize in tonight's remarks that the US commitment to Afghanistan is not open ended. In fact, the officials said Mr Obama will talk about a date that the US will begin to transfer our "lead" to the Afghans and begin to withdraw the surge troops starting in July 2011.
We are told the President will not specify an end date, or a specific date when all US troops will withdraw from Afghanistan. "The pace and end will be dictated by the situation on the ground," say administration officials.
