Mets hand Andy Green a three-year deal, skipping external manager search entirely

The New York Mets handed Andy Green a three-year contract on Tuesday, removing his interim tag and delivering a giant middle finger to a fan base that spent all summer watching a $300 million roster flounder.
When the Mets fired Carlos Mendoza on June 26 following a 34-47 start, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns insisted Green was strictly an interim solution.

Previously, Green was serving as senior vice of player development, and the organization made it clear he would return to his front-office desk at season's end while the team conducted a full search.
Three months later, Stearns reversed course completely, skipping external interviews altogether and locking down Green through 2029.
Instead of making calls to proven managers like Alex Cora, Bob Melvin, or Joe Espada, or even testing the market on established names like Torey Lovullo, Don Mattingly, Rocco Baldelli, or Dave Martinez, Stearns opted for the ultimate shortcut.

With this decision, fan patience with Stearns and the ball club has officially hit rock bottom.

Stearns was brought to Queens with the reputation of an analytical mastermind who was going to build a sustainable juggernaut backed by Steve Cohen’s endless wallet.
Instead, he looks like a guy winging it. Promising a thorough search for a top-tier manager and then settling on the guy sitting two doors down in the executive suite is textbook Mets.

It is not like Green’s resume gives anyone a reason to throw a parade in Flushing. His previous managerial run with the San Diego Padres ended in a mid-season firing after four consecutive losing campaigns, leaving him with a dismal 274-366 career record entering this year.

The outrage in Queens is not just about Green; it is about the insult to anyone who watched this garbage season unfold.
The Mets sit dead last in the NL East with an embarrassing 71-85 record.
Despite carrying one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball, New York was effectively dead in the water before the All-Star break. Mendoza opened the year 34-47, and Green managed an unimpressive 37-38 stretch to finish out the string.
Rewarding a last-place finish and a sub-.500 interim run with a three-year deal sends a wild message to a fan base that has watched an endless parade of managers pass through Citi Field.
