Study: Kids Sent Home Even With Mild Symptoms

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A survey of more than 300 Milwaukee-area child care directors finds that sick children are often sent home even with only mild symptoms.

The study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics says those decisions can burden parents and hospitals. The authors say child care workers should be educated about health guidelines that suggest when sick kids are still healthy enough to remain at the center.

Researchers gave the directors five scenarios. In all five cases, guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association say the kids wouldn't need to be sent home immediately.

The less experienced the directors, the more likely they were to say the children should be sent home.
