Ohio Boy, 6, Loses Both Arms and Legs to Meningitis

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A 6-year-old Oklahoma boy whose arms and legs were amputated because of a meningitis-related disease is now at a hospital in Cincinnati for reconstructive surgeries.

Jeremiah Mitchell of Oologah arrived at Shriners Hospital for Children on Monday and placed in intensive care. Both his arms and both legs were amputated last week.

The boy is one of at least six children at an Oologah elementary school who contracted the meningococcal disease earlier this month. A 7-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl died.

Shriners Hospital spokeswoman Louise Hoelker says Jeremiah will have several surgeries and skin grafts to his face. He currently has severe damage around his eyes and is unable to open them.
