New Jersey to Toughen Rules on High School Athlete Concussions

Proposed new regulations in New Jersey will require high school student athletes to obtain a doctor's approval after a concussion before returning to games.

The rules are slated for approval by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, the state's athletic governing board, next month.

The regulations come as states are taking greater interest in the treatment of student athletes who suffer head injuries.

The federal Centers for Disease Control says Washington and Oregon have passed laws covering head injury treatment procedures. Maine has created a head injury prevention group.

The Brain Injury Association of America estimates the number of sports- and recreation-related concussions at 3.8 million a year.
